How to be a better student of mathematics?

School students should strive to become familiar with mathematical ideas and principles by doing lots of repetitive drill exercises and then correcting their answers to the answers provided at the back of the book. A certain amount of memorization is usually required especially in the earlier years of schooling. After this stage* the student should seek understanding in the form of intuition for mathematical ideas and principles by doing as many problems as possible from a variety of sources and difficulty levels. This intuition will be essential in the learning and writing of mathematical proofs which becomes the central focus for second year Uni students and beyond. Processing and storing complex mathematical ideas takes time. If the student is willing to put in the effort then guidance from an experienced and caring tutoring will make sure that he/she moves as quickly as possible on the path to mathematical success.

*Students who have done poorly in this initial stage should seek urgent help as they will find it harder and harder to learn mathematics as they move up the year levels.

What are the benefits of receiving regular maths tuition from me?

Learning in a classroom or lecture environment is often ineffective due to the simple but unavoidable inconvenience of large student-teacher ratios. Gaps in understanding can quickly arise and if not filled will lead to confusion and ultimately lower grades. I will correct misunderstandings and seal gaps in your knowledge in order to prepare you to achieve higher grades. Moreover, due to the one to one interaction, I will get to know you over time and hence will present the material to you that best suits your learning style and needs. If needed I will give you extra resources and exercises for homework. In the week leading up to tests and exams I will gladly correspond via email with the student any extra questions they may have but did not ask during the tutorial.

I am a friendly, patient and reliable tutor. For all my adult life, I have been (and will continue to be) an academic and educator in mathematics and hence have acquired a very broad knowledge base. I can therefore not only help students more effectively do problems and assignments but also lead them to see the ‘big picture’. This often increases the student’s appreciation and enjoyment for the subject and they are more motivated as a result.

Note: Most students will benefit a lot from preparing before the school term or University semester begins. I am happy to help students prepare for subjects during the school or University breaks and make sure they get an advantageous head start.

I have tutored over 800 satisfied students by helping them to achieve the best results possible. My rate for one to one tuition is $60 per hour. Tutoring times are by appointment. Note: I reply to tutoring inquires as soon as possible.

I am a part-time teaching associate at The University of Melbourne at present, and a member of Australian Education Union (AEU) & Independent Education Union (IEU). After having obtained my Ph. D. degree in molecular biology at the University of Adelaide in 2002, I had worked as a postdoctoral research fellow for more than 6 years at CSIRO and the University of Melbourne respectively.

I am familiar with the present VCE study designs (2013 -2016) and IB Diploma Programme curricula for maths, physics, chemistry or biology. Quite a few students studying with me for a period of time got A+ in their End-of-year exams. One of my VCE students was offered a place for pursuing Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The student's final ATAR is 99.55.

My expertise in biological research gives me many advantages to develop effective strategies to solve UMAT questions, especially in logical reasoning & problem Solving, and non-verbal reasoning. Students find my strategies very effective. One of my UMAT students got an average percentile of 99% in UMAT.

Being up to date with GAMSAT since 2007, I am familiar with the topics and theories frequently tested in Section III. I have summarised theories and concepts needed for section III and complied and classified the questions tested in previous years. My GAMSAT clients have achieved satisfactory scores in Section III after working with me for a period of time. One client has been offered a place to pursue MBBS at the University of Sydney in 2013, another got into Deakin.

Additional Information:

I have been a tutor for students in high school - university level studies since 2010. My tutorials generally are tailored to suit the student. Whether they have problems that they want to go through or whether they want to focus on concepts. I personally find that going through a problem, to understand the concepts is the best way to learn maths. That’s how I generally teach students. My students have found themselves successful in their studies. A student of mine that I was tutoring in Mathematical Methods from 2015 – 2016, had finished year 12 with an ATAR of 99.80 and a study score of 42 in Mathematical Methods

I am someone who’s been passionate about mathematics since high school. I completed high school in 2008 and went on to start a BSc majoring in mathematical physics (2009 - 2012). In 2012, I enrolled in a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics/Mathematical Physics (2012 - 2014). My research project was supervised by Prof. Paul Pearce and the title of my thesis was “Towards Logarithmic D-Type Models” (thesis link here http://bit.ly/2lUXYk6). As of 2016, I have enrolled in a Master of Engineering Degree (Civil Engineering).

Kind regards,

Joel Gill

Additional Information:

I have a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Pure Mathematics and Statistics, Stochastic Processes and a Master degree in IT, majoring in Software Design and Development. I was the former President of Melbourne University Mathematics Statistics Society 2015-2016.I believe that a good teacher can teach students concepts and help them with homework but a GREAT teacher can teach students how to learn so that they can achieve results even when he is no longer there. Unlike many other tutors, whose teaching only have short term impact, I aim to have life-long impacts to my students by teaching them principles of success & the science of achievement beside course content! From my observation after 6 years of teaching experience, most VCE students work hard, but it is actually what they work on that cause them to over-stress and under-perform i.e making beautiful note summaries;rewritten textbook questions, chitchatting with friends thinking that they are doing group discussion etc.

What can I offer you as a tutor?

. Course notes that I personally written (obviously) with selective & modified questions from VCE exams paperfor each topic that I teach. This is designed so that you can see finishing VCE Maths exams are possible foryourself

. Strategies to achieve greatly in other subjects. This is the results of me talking to many friends who achieved 50 raw score in subjects such as English, P.E, H.H.D, Physics, Chemistry etc, "success leaves clues" :)

. Unique and in-depth understanding of Mathematics. As a student who has completed University degree in Mathematics at Melbourne University, I understand Mathematics at a much deeper level than other VCE tutors. I can provide you with in-depth explanation and show you how to connect mathematical concepts together. This would make your understanding of Maths solid, allowing you to remember the concept & pattern for life.

. 24/7 access! Unlike other tutor, I encourage student to contact me outside class whenever they have questions and I will answer within 24hr

Hi, I'm a professional and very experienced tutor who has helped numerous students gain confidence in maths and science.

While I tutor a range of subjects and levels (highschool to university), my specialty is in helping aspiring medical students with Section 3 of the GAMSAT.

The GAMSAT can seem daunting but I can show you some strategies and tips to help gain confidence in Section 3 and ensure you get the best result possible. Many of my students improved their scores significantly and in some cases were finally able to achieve a 70+ score!

My rate is $80/hr and sessions are held at the state library or mt waverley library. I also do Skype tutoring and can offer a free 1hr trial.

Below are some student testimonials:

"First time I ever hired a tutor. I asked Barry to advise me with a 3rd year Engineering assignment. On the one hour I had with him he provided me with three different approaches to a complex problem that helped me get the assignment done with the level of competence that I wanted." - Daniel (Engineering student)

"Barry is a great and an experienced tutor who is able to explain concepts well. Was very helpful with preparing me for exams. :)" - Florence (Physics for Biomed student)

"Section 3 is usually the most daunting of all, yet somehow Barry managed to deconstruct some of the most overwhelming topics and show us that every question can be done with the right mindset and thinking. On top of being an extraordinary tutor, Barry was incredibly friendly and polite and is always eager to help to the best of his abilities. 5/5 stars is an injustice to the credit he deserves." - Tanvir (GAMSAT candidate)

Additional Information:

Hi there! My name is Ricky and I have over 10 years of teaching experience at some of the top high schools in Victoria. I am a fully qualified teacher for VCE/IB Specialist Mathematics and Mathematical Methods, and am a VCAA Examiner for both these subjects, 5 years and counting.

With over a decade of experience, I am confident in my abilities to not only teach, but to also enable my students to reach their full potential. My goal as a teacher is to engage my students, and make the content both interesting and accessible. I am a cheerful and approachable person. Whilst maintaining the integral complexity of the subject, the atmosphere of my lessons is light-hearted and encouraging, so I hope that all my students will be able to find enjoyment in learning. I also place an emphasis on a thorough and in-depth understanding of foundation knowledge, thus students will feel fully prepared and confident to face more complex concepts in the future.
Whilst it may sound like I can be easy-going, I will also seek to challenge my students with more difficult, exam-style questions in effort to emulate what they will face during the end of year exams. With tips and tricks on how to tackle commonly made mistakes, students will be capable of achieving outstanding results.

Student achievements in 2014:
• 96% achieved ATARs of 95+
• 90% achieved 40+ in VCE Maths Methods
• 92% achieved 7 in IB High Level Maths
• 95% achieved 45-50 in VCE Spec. Maths

My success as a teacher not only lies in the results of my students, but also as the director of two independent and successful coaching institutions. I am the founder and Chief Lecturer at RL Tuition located on Lonsdale St in the Melbourne CBD. We specialise in VCE/IB subjects such as Maths, Chemistry, English and more, including classes for students from Primary School to the Junior years of High School.
I run private tuition ($50-90 per hour) and group lessons during the weekend ($50 for a 2 hour lesson). Students who are unsure are welcome to attend a FREE full length session (2 hours), and will also get a bonus gift if they indicate which RL Tuition advertisement they saw during enrollment. All my students will receive a comprehensive bound notes book which covers an entire year’s worth of content, written by myself. The layout and content are both succinct and in-depth, a physical oxymoron of sorts. It includes formulas, challenging questions and answers, shortcuts and much more to ensure that students will be familiar with the entirety of the subject. The notes are used throughout the year, but can also be used during the end of year exams as a valuable bound reference.

I have had the privilege of teaching thousands of students over the years, and I look forward to welcoming you too!

Ricky Liu
Director of RL Tuition

Location/s: Western and Northern Suburbs, and Central Melbourne (CBD)
I am available weekends and weekdays, so feel free to contact me to work out a time

Additional Information: I am a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Mathematics and a Post Graduate in Mathematical Statistics. Certified banker and accounting professional, I have above 10 years of teaching experience. A good understanding of the subject and an ability to understand the base knowledge level of the student is my core strength.
I charge $50 for one-to-one tutoring ($40 for the first session), $40/person for the group of two. I do not encourage a group bigger than two.
My philosophy of teaching is to make the basic concepts clear to the student, develop a self interest in the student and then build from there, rather than preparing the student just for exams. I aim to make a sustained impact to my students by making them realise the benefits of subject in day-to-day and professional life.

Currently, I am working as a Tutor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Melbourne. I have been working as a private Tutor in Mathematics since 1997. Up to now, majority of mathematics subjects from primary school to year 2 at university level I have taught.
I received my Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering from the University of Melbourne in 2004. After that, I have worked as a Research Fellow or Lecture for seven years in several universities in Australia.
I received my Master degree in Mathematics from Zhengzhou University in China. After that, I have nine year lecturing experience in Mathematics in two universities respectively, both in China, where I taught the subjects “Economics Mathematics”, “Mathematical Modelling”, “Advanced Mathematics” and “Operation Research”.
I received my Bachelor degree in Mathematics. After that and before my Master degree study, I have been a Mathematics teacher in a high school in China for two years.
After coming to Australia in 1997 and before my Ph.D. study, I have been a Tutor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Western Australia for three semesters, where I was responsible for the consultation and marking for the subjects “Linear Algebra” and “Advanced Mathematics”.
I really enjoy to work with various students who may have quite different background. No words could express my happiness when my students told me that they could enjoy mathematics more when they studied with me in Mathematics more!
